A Guide to Good Personal Hygiene For Children
|
Every school year children pass around various germs including colds, flus, and digestive disorders, and annually an average of 20,000 children are hospitalized due to influenza complications. Children also die yearly because of flu complications. During the H1n1 outbreak in 2009 approximately 340 deaths occurred. Although there is a yearly flu outbreak, this is not the only reason why children become sick. Several studies have shown that simple applying good hygiene eliminated more than 50% of common childhood illnesses.
Daily children are in places that provide the ideal breeding ground to spread germs such as school and daycare. These germs are spread two ways person-to-person contact (touching, kissing) and indirect contact (surfaces, toys). Children are vulnerable to contact germ both ways because of the environment they are in daily. Approximately 80% of all infectious disease that children receive occurred due to contact.
As parents, we taught our children the importance of good personal hygiene. We tell them to wash their hands before they eat and after touching pets or after playing outdoors. We also taught them how important it is to apply good personal hygiene after bathroom use at home as well as in public. They are also told to always wash their hands. Because by washing their hands, it reduces their chances of becoming sick, spreading germs and causing other people to become sick. However, most kids run their hands under water for a few seconds and that is it. Some do not use the hand soap or if they use the soap, they may not use it correctly. Parents should encourage children to lather the soap, and make sure it gets into their fingernails, knuckles and between their fingers for at least 15 seconds. This would eliminate some of the infections from spreading.
With the recent outbreak of swine flu, health care providers have placed more emphasis on maintaining good personal hygiene. Some supermarkets decided to play a part in preventing germs by providing their customers with antibacterial wipes on their shopping carts. If you have young children, this is a good way for you to demonstrate to your children how important it is to clean their hands. Encourage them to use antibacterial wipes and sanitizers when they do not have access to soap and water.
Most bathrooms now provide its user the option of using paper towels or hand dryers to dry their hand. Using a hand dyer instead of using paper towel not only dry the hand, but reduces waste that is common when paper towel is used instead and thus more economical. Children should use the automatic hand dryer after each bathroom use because it will help kill any remaining bacteria on their hands. Using the hand dryer is easy simply wave your hand in front of the sensor and the dryer come on.
If your child is not practicing good personal hygiene, take the time and encourage him to use the wash his hand and use the soap dispenser plus the hand dryer to prevent illnesses.
