Looking after your digital camera properly is something every good camera owner knows is important. Take a look through our guide to some of the most problematic camera problems, and how you can help to keep them at bay.

Lotions and potions like sunscreen

While sunscreen and insect repellent are part of most photographers kits when you are out of doors, you should do all you can to keep these greasy lotions away from your camera, as creams and lotions like these can cause cameras to malfunction when they come into contact with one another. Make sure that you wash your hands in fresh water after you have applied insect repellent or any cream or lotion, minimising the amount of lotion that is left on your hands in order to prevent any damage. Furthermore, avoid placing creams and lotions in in a bag along with your camera, as while this might be convenient, it could do some real damage to your camera in the event that one of them were to spring a leak.

Sand

Sand may be tiny but it, can cause no end of havoc if it is allowed to get into any digital camera. Even one single grain of sand can inhibit your digital camera from working fully if it works its way into certain parts of the camera, such as the camera shutter. One way around this is to not take your camera to the beach, but this may not be particularly feasible on a beach holiday for example. An alternative way for you to keep sand away from your camera is to always pack it in a sealable bag and always bring some cleaning brushes with you should any grains of sand or grit does get onto or into the camera. Another tip is to always to steer clear of changing lenses, batteries or memory cards when you are in an area where sand is prevalent, but if it is necessary to do so, then you should try to avoid activities taking place in the beach where a lot of sand is airborn, such as when people are kicking balls or throwing Frisbees.

Dust

Dust is not abrasive like sand, but it can nonetheless cause a range of problems inside a digital camera. Dust settling on your camera can work its way inside the body of the camera and get in front of your image sensor, causing it to perform poorly or stop working altogether. You can prevent this problem by wiping down your camera every day, sealing it inside a bag when not in use, and being careful when you change lenses. It is well worth getting the sensor on a Digital SLR cleaned professionally, as this can have a marked effect on the quality of your images.
