Whether buying for the hotel sector or for your own home it may be surprising to find that there is a wide choice of mattress protectors available, particularly from specialist suppliers. Mattress protectors can prolong the life of a mattress and improve hygiene for bedding. They can also add a little more comfort to a hard bed. Most importantly, fitting good quality mattress protectors allows you to keep a new mattress in the best condition, because whilst you cannot machine wash a mattress you can with many protectors.

Grams per Square Metre:
As with most bedding the first indication of quality is the GSM rating – the grams per square metre. A budget protector will be a simple cover weighted at around 50 to 100gsm. A luxury product will be well over 1000gsm. The difference is both in the cover and in the quilting. A budget cover will more likely have a polyester cover and little or no quilting, whereas the luxury range will have a heavier 100% cotton cover with a special filling that weighs more.

Types of Covers:
Different levels of water resistance are available depending on the cover and filling of the protector. A lower level of resistance will be indicated by the terms 'moisture' or 'water resistant'. These covers are usually made from polypropylene and if they have a PVC backing this will increase the level of water resistance. The highest level will be indicated by the term 'waterproof' and likely be made from terry towelling fabric bonded to a PVC membrane, ensuring full protection of the mattress from all liquids and stains.

Types of Fillings:
This is where the difference in quality and price can really be found, with the high-end protectors having high-quality fillings that will last longer. A budget protector will likely have polyester filling, whereas the mid-range will have hollofibre and cost as much as double the price. Luxury protectors not only have a siliconised ball fibre filling, this is encased in boxes sewn into the cover to prevent the filling from moving around. This kind of luxury will likely double the price again, but it means that the protector not only protects it adds comfort.

Sizes:
Some protectors will only be available in the most common mattress sizes – single, double and king – but those made for the hospitality sector will more likely be in a wide range of sizes, even including bunk beds (approximately 75 x 190cm).

It is important to note whether you need metric sizes or imperial for your mattresses. Metric sized protectors will be larger than the equivalent imperial size. For example, an imperial single protector will be around 90 x 190cm, whereas a metric single will be around 100 x 200cm. For king sizes the difference grows to 50cm across the width.

Fire Safety:
For the hotel sector and other industries that must meet fire safety standards there are special protectors available. These will rely on the fire retardant qualities inherent in man-made fabrics, with polypropylene covers and polyester fillings. By buying from specialist suppliers, cost savings can be made for bulk purchases and you will have the reassurance that products definitely meet the safety standards you require. These suppliers clearly mark which protectors are flame retardant and to which source number pertaining to the required BS7175.
