Orlando Figes was brought into life in London in the 20th day of November, 1959. Born within the family of writers, he finds great pleasure in writing as well. His mother, Eva Figes, is a feminist writer who single-handedly raised their family. She wrote a number of non-fiction and about thirteen novels mostly regarding feminism. His sister, Kate Figes is an editor and author too. He was only three years old when his father abandoned them so his formative years were spent mostly in a feminist environment in Hampstead, North London. He attended William Ellis School here from 1971 to 1978. When he first came to William Ellis, it was only a grammar school. But when he was in sixth grade, it became a comprehensive institution. He was a year younger than the distinguished historians such as Toby Abse and Mark Mazower, who were both an alumni of the school.
From then on, his interest in writing about history flourishes so Orlando Figes decided to go to Cambridge in 1979. He studied history at Gonville and Caius College. During those times, Gonville and Caius is the top college that teaches history in Cambridge. It was a privilege for him to be studying there together with two European historians, Norman Stone and Peter Burke. He composed a thesis paper entitled “Ludwig Borne and the Formation of a Radical Critique of Judaism” which was later published in the yearbook of Leo Baeck Institute in 1984. With an exceptional double-starred First from Cambridge, he graduated in 1982. With the continuous guidance of Norman Stone, he pursued a PhD at Trinity College in Cambridge and become a Fellow from 1984 to 1999. His studies about the Volga region and the peasantry for the duration of Russian Revolution led him to write his first book, the Peasant Russian, Civil War: The Volga Countryside in Revolution (1917-1921). It was published in 1989. While he was still doing some research about the book in Moscow, he became a Lecturer in History from 1987 to 1999 at the University of Cambridge. Then he took up the Birkbeck College’ Chair of History at the London University.
