It’s a good idea to think through everything else that will go into the room before you actually begin. Planning and research at the start will probably save you time and money in the long run.

Here are some more things to consider and projects to do

1. Floor

- Starting with the floor, decide what type of floor covering you will use in the room.

- Flooring should be a soft, impact-absorbing material such as carpet or a rug.

- Carpet should be woollen rather than nylon and avoid shaggy versions – they are hard to keep clean and a sure-fire germ breeding ground.

- If you have a hard floor that needs to be covered with rugs, the same rules apply, short-weave, woollen varieties are best. Always use an anti-slip underlay.

- You can hang picture frames on the wall. It may be made with your child’s favorite characters filling up the whole frame or anything that fits to the design of the wall. Make sure the colors contrast the wall so that they stand out. The pictures can be taken from magazines or old calendars with appropriate pictures of beautiful images that would suit the room’s theme. You can put glow in the dark stickers on the ceiling or on the wall. This can enhance the beauty of the room even when the lights are shut off.

3. Lighting

A child’s room should include both a functional light for homework and reading, and soothing light for less stressful times.

Safety cannot be overemphasized where lighting is concerned. Although many table lamps are attractively designed for use in children’s rooms, these should always be carefully positioned, out of reach of the young child, and trailing cables should be avoided.

Good overhead or wall lighting is what is needed, but care should be taken to ensure that the resting child is not blinded by the glare from an unshielded bulb. A glowing night light kept on till morning offers much reassurance to a young child when nightmares loom. Although few electric sockets may be required for the very young baby, remember to install sufficient for future needs as he/she grows up. These can be blanked off until required.

4. Window coverings

- For young children, you should make sure that a bed, chair or dresser does not provide a stepping-stone to the window. Fit window locks, or safety catches, to the window, to be sure.

- Be aware of blind and curtain cords. These can be a safety hazard to toddlers. When you choose your blinds you should double check that the cord or chain lengths are short enough so your child can’t reach them and that you can clip the cord or chain down for further protection.

- Curtains and blinds are another element that can be interchanged over time as children get older. Choose bright colours or cartoon prints for young children. They might like to choose their own as they get older.
