All these forms allow people to contact and communicate with thousands of different people and does not limit them to chat with only those they know. The ability to communicate with thousands of people means the amount of information one may receive is much greater. A discussion board is a popular form of communication to find and share information. This type of communication is also called a forum. The discussion board is like a traditional bulletin board because it posts information. The online discussion board posts topic categories and each of these postings can be opened to find more information. The categories on a discussion board are called folders. Each folder contains a discussion thread on a particular topic. An example to demonstrate this is a folder entitled social networks and a thread may discuss a particular social network. The discussion threads on a board have the thoughts and opinions of other people. This may be their personal experience or their expert opinion. These are called replies on a discussion board. A discussion board works by an individual posting a thread which is the topic discussion. People can respond or reply to the thread or other replies. Chat rooms and a discussion board are different because the latter archives the threads for a certain amount of time. This means that people may access the threads for a period of time after they have been posted. Chat rooms are immediate and do not save any information about the communication. Various different social networking sites and other websites host discussion boards. The ability to communicate via these threads will vary depending on the website. Some sites require a person to become a member while others allow anyone to post a reply to a thread. A discussion board is a revolutionary way to communicate and is an effective way of finding a great deal of information on a particular topic.
