One of the most unique living styles available is possible on the shores of Lake Union, a small freshwater lake entirely within the city limits of Seattle, Washington. This little lake is connected via canals to Lake Washington, the second largest lake in the state, and is also connected to Puget Sound, where boats use the Locks to easily go between the saltwater and freshwater. The city of Seattle rises just to the south of it, and the Space Needle can be easily seen from anywhere on the lake.

The style of unique living afforded by this lake is the plethora of floating houses, or houseboats that grace the edges of the lake. These homes are some of the most unique in Seattle, and often feature a style and design that could easily be works of art. The signature of many local Seattle artists and architects can be seen in these homes. While it is true that these houses are often on the smaller side, they make up for size in location and individuality. It is possible to find sprawling floating homes that are nearly indistinguishable from those you would find on land. They are simply a little less common.

You have a few different options if you want to live on Lake Union. Your options include living in a houseboat, condo, house barge, floating home, or liveaboard. There are tons of condos with views of Lake Union that ring the lake, and these are wonderful places to live. Most of the time, these condos have incredible views of the water and the city as well. Since the land slopes away from the lake on nearly all sides, the opportunities for peekaboo views or full out stunning ones are good in the surrounding areas.

Floating homes are a wonderful opportunity as well. Tom Hanks lived on one of these in the memorable film, Sleepless in Seattle. Most of this movie was filmed on or around Lake Union. There are only a few floating home communities in the entire United States, and it is an utterly life-changing experience. That these areas provide a tight-knit, community feel is an understatement. The surrounding nature and stunning views are not something to take for granted, and the grandeur of the area is hard to miss.

There are no real estate taxes on houseboats, but you do have to pay sales tax and dock fees. There are never any lawns to mow. Because these homes are in the water, they generally require slightly more maintenance, but the benefits far outweigh the negative aspects. Buying a houseboat or floating home on Lake Union suddenly brings you into one of the smallest, exclusive, most unique communities in the nation, and indeed, the world. This is no exaggeration. You can step off your front porch and boat to your favorite restaurant across the lake, or have your daily exercise include kayaking or windsurfing. If you want to become a part of one of the most unparallelled Seattleite experiences, consider living on the stunning waters of Lake Union in a houseboat.
