The impressive HTC Desire S is one of the new versions of the winning formula that the manufacturer formulated with the popular HTC Desire. In this article I will take a closer look at the camera of this phone so you can decide if it is the handset for you when purchasing your next camera phone.

The camera on the HTC Desire S operates at 5 megapixels with a resolution of 2592x 1944. This means that the resulting still images are of excellent quality thanks to the levels of detail found in the camera’s resolution. Taking photos is a simple task thanks to the inclusion of a comprehensive package of image enhancing features. Among these is image stabilisation. This works by counteracting any slight movements the user may make when operating the camera and eliminates any blur which results meaning that the photo will be crisp, sharp and clear. Also included is touch focus. This works by allowing the user to tap the screen on a particular point of interest when lining up the shot. Users can then zoom in to the appropriate level to get the desired photo. Alternatively, users can enable the autofocus function which automatically zooms to the correct level based upon the cameras sensors which calculates the distance to the photo’s subject. In order to overcome the obstacle of poor lighting conditions or when taking photos at night, the camera also comes with an LED flash. This can be set to automatic, where the phone will automatically active it if it considered the conditions to be too dark, or users can manually enable/disable to achieve the desired effect. Geo tagging is another function which is included. This works courtesy of the phones built in GPS receiver. This automatically tags the location, at which the camera was used, and you can then browse the photos by location and they can even be displayed on a map which shows where the photos were taken.

As with most smartphones, the HTC Desire S can also be used as a fully functioning video camera. It is capable of capturing video footage in impressive 720p quality. This produces very impressive and high quality results which are every bit as pleasing as the still images.

If you wish to view your handiwork on the big screen, the HTC Desire S has got it covered with DLNA connectivity. This allows users to wirelessly stream videos and photos as well as other data such as music tracks, to a compatible TV or computer. This is ideal for showing off your photos to groups of people so they don’t have to crowd around the phone.

As you can see, the HTC Desire S is a great camera phone but there is plenty besides this to like about the handset. The latest version of the Android operating system (v2.3, aka Gingerbread) works alongside a powerful 1 GHz Scorpion processor, both of which combine to provide a customisable and powerful user experience. Access to the Android Market allows users to download numerous apps from many different categories, massively enhancing the functionality of the handset.

The HTC Desire S is available now on all major UK networks, with many deals including the handset free of charge, so not only is the phone very impressive, but surprisingly affordable.
