Welding is a fabrication process of joining two or more metals together into one joint. This is done by generating heat and melting the metals and adding filler metals, which cools down and becomes a strong joint. This filler metals are also known as electrode or welding wires. Welding process depends on different factors such as temperature, materials, place of welding (surface or underwater) and many other factors.

Nowadays, there are numerous welding processes prevailing in the market including TIG welding, MIG welding, SAW welding, underwater welding and many more. In fact, for every particular welding work there is a requirement of particular welding process. However, amongst all the welding processes TIG - Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, MIG - Metal Inert Gas Welding and SAW - Submerged Arc Welding are the three major welding processes used around the world. Below is the brief description on all three:

TIG Welding

Gas Tungsten Arc welding process or commonly known as TIG welding is a process wherein the metals are joined together by generating the heat between the work surface and non consumable tungsten electrode. Gas argon is used in this process as a shielding gas. Generally in this process tungsten alloy rod or tungsten is used, however multiple electrodes are also sometimes. The tungsten electrode, the molten metal and the heated welding zone; all are protected from the surrounding atmosphere by the shield layer covered with an inert gas which is fed by the electrode holder. As per the requirements the filler metals can be added later. The touching filler metals and the work piece are joined together once its cools and solidifies. TIG welding process is somewhat similar to other arc welding processes in which the heat is produced with the arc between the work material and the non consumable electrode however the electrode types and the work materials are different from other arc welding processes.

MIG Welding

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Metal Active Gas (MAG) welding, Metal Inert Gas welding or commonly known as MIG welding is a process which can be both automatic and semi-automatic arc welding process and in which a consumable and continuous shielding gas are provided through a welding gun, along with the wire electrode. The shielding is obtained from externally supplied gas mixture or gas. Direct current power source and constant voltage is most commonly used in the MIG welding process. However, apart from that alternating current and constant current systems can also be used in it. Furthermore, in MIG welding process there are four major methods to transfer the metals. These four major methods are spray, pulsed-spray, globular and short circuiting. Each method has their relevant advantages and distinguished properties, along with limitations.

SAW Welding

Submerged Arc Welded Tubular, Submerged Arc Welding or commonly known as SAW welding is a process in which metals are joined together by generating heat between the work surface and bare metal electrode with the help of an arc. A shield blanket of granular fusible material provides protection to the arc from the external gases in this process. The filler metals are obtained from the electrode and the supplementary welding rod and it does not involve any pressure.
