According to studies, it is found that cancer in the kidney is the 7th most common form of cancer in the world. While in most cases the exact cause of kidney cancer is unknown, some of the unhealthy habits such as cigarette smoking and being obese can pose as risk factors for the same. With unhealthy lifestyle habits, young children also probably develop the risk of kidney cancer, also known as Wilms’ tumor.
Regular exercises, maintenance of healthy weight and good dietary habits are all some measures to prevent them. So here are some of the ways to prevent cancer in the kidney, explained in detail:
1. Expand your Diet
The foods we consume can impact our health in great ways; hence we all must depend on as much fresh produce as possible. One of the effective ways to improve health is to rely upon plant based foods, which also reduces the risk of cancer.
Several colorful fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants that are highly beneficial in preventing cancers. Some of such foods include: Grapefruit, broccoli, pomegranate, berries, garlic and sweet potatoes.
2. Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Studies reveal that obesity accounts to almost 25 percent of kidney cancer cases. This is why health experts always suggest maintaining a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI). An average adult should maintain a BMI that falls between 18.5 and 24.9. Those having a BMI between 25 and 30 are considered overweight and have higher risk of developing cancer.
3. Monitor your Blood Pressure:
High blood pressure is one of such risk factors of kidney cancer. The best means to reduce your blood pressure levels is to consume diet consisting of fresh produce, lean protein sources and whole grains. Also try exercising at least 150 minutes per week. If you are prescribed medication for high blood pressure, try speaking to your doctor for suggestions on altering your lifestyle habits.
4. Be in the Know of Environmental Toxins:
Most of them do not realize that the toxins they contact with can increase the risks of cancer. Be careful about whatever you use. It is always safe and wise to rely upon natural products such as vinegar and concentrated lemon juice which works effectively as well. Some of the products you must be careful about include burnt foods, deli meats, air fresheners, car fumes, canned foods, weed killers.
There are several internal and external factors that contribute to cancer in the kidney. Fine tuning your lifestyle habits and bringing some positive changes to them, ditching fast foods for healthy green leafy vegetables, nutrient rich fruits & other fresh produce and exercising regularly are some of the ways with which the risks can be reduced by many folds.
