With the recent release of several blockbuster hits in 3D, such as Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and many others, more consumers are now seriously considering the purchase of a 3D TV Set for their home entertainment center.
Although 3D is hardly a new concept, it is a significant breakthrough in the world of television viewing. When most of us think of 3D, we remember the old, paper glasses and horror film genre in our hometown theatre. As with most everything, the technology has evolved considerably since those days and many major film industries are slated to release several 3D movies in the next few months, which will eventually be available on DVD for the avid consumer.
All 3D technologies use the principal of stereoscopic vision, where each eye sees a slightly different image, which will be interpreted by the brain as the perception of depth. Now that moviegoers have been exposed to the eye popping effect of 3D, they crave the same experience at home and most major electronic manufacturers are falling over each other, trying to get their products on the shelves to meet the demand.
Despite the relatively new technology, major manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung and Panasonic either have 3D TV Sets on the market or are set to release their offerings this year. In order to experience the 3D effect, most sets will require specialized glasses, which some are including with the TV. The two current types available are passive polarized and active shutter. Some manufacturers are releasing models that do not require glasses but the downside is one must be positioned at a set distance, making it difficult for more than a couple of people to enjoy the experience. Needless to say, manufacturers are currently experimenting for a way around the glasses or limited viewing area.
Most everyone who plans to purchase a 3D TV will also need a 3D Blu-ray player and a few major outlets are featuring both as a bundle. Although 3D content to watch still remains a challenge, titles will be trickling in as the year progresses but, many of them will be animated movies targeted at children; hopefully, that will change relative to the demand. On the upside, DirecTV plans to launch 3D programming to its subscribers sometime this year.
Regardless of the pros/cons, or cost, of this new 3D technology, many consumers will be adding the 3D TV Set to their have-to-have-it list.
