The Florida Panhandle has too many hot spots for vacationers to list in their entirety. Here are the five that get repeated attention year after year for offering vacationers everything they want and need in a Florida destination.
Scenic Highway 30-A is one of the country’s most traveled areas and why wouldn’t it be? Highway 30-A is comprised of 18.5-miles plus 9.4 miles of connector roads stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to US 98 and 395 from the Gulf of Mexico to the Choctawhatchee Bay. It traverses long-leaf pine flatwoods, white sand beach and sea oat-covered dunes. It is one of the most majestic highways in the country and also takes visitors past freshwater coastal lakes and saltwater inlets, over sand hills and coastal uplands, along wetlands and marshes, through hardwood hammocks and coastal scrub.

Accompanying this scenery are several beautiful communities to live in and or visit. Here are just five of what are considered to be among the area’s top communities:

1. Alys Beach—The unique coastal subdivision pronounced "Al-is" is perhaps best known for its trademark two pillars and remarkable army of Canary Island date palms and stark, white estate homes reflective of the architecture of Bermuda. The community features a 21-acre nature preserve, an amphitheater, neighborhood parks, tennis courts and fine restaurants. Alys Beach is said to be the first Fortified for safer living community.

2. Dune Allen—This community is said to have been a favorite vacation destination for generations. Best known for its Fishing and flip flop vibe, the community also boasts excellent shopping and dining, as well as fun night spots. Nearby is also the Topsail Hill State Preserve, which ranks as one of Florida’s most treasured parks, with its beaches, majestic dunes and tranquil coastal dune lakes remaining virtually untouched throughout the centuries.

3. Grayton—This is where vacationing along the Panhandle is said to have been initiated, as early travelers arrived by horse and buggy to take in the majesty of the white sandy shores. The area is populated with charming, historic cottages, twisting oak trees, shops and fine galleries, and a slogan that says it all about its off-beat locals: “Nice dogs, strange people.” Grayton Beach is also the only place in the region where you can drive a 4WD vehicle directly out onto the sand (but only with a proper permit!).

4. Rosemary Beach—This architectural wonder-community is said to boast influences from the West Indies, New Orleans, Charleston and St. Augustine and other locales. It’s sweeping grand estates and adjoining carriage houses are reflective of days gone by and yet interlinked with a network of pedestrian pths and boardwalks, flanked by gas-lit lanterns at night that only add to the old-world allure. Like most Traditional Neighborhood Developments (TNDs), exploring the community on foot of bike is said to be the only way to take in what many refer to as “The Long Green,” where annual festivals and outdoor markets abound year-round.

Seaside—Known for its innovative "small town" design, this community is said to have been carefully planned to ensure maximum exposure to nature’s beauty and classic community amenities. It boasts nine unique beach pavilions, cobblestone streets, quaint cottages, white picket fences, and picture-perfect parks and storefronts and was once heralded by Newsweek as “probably the most influential resort community since Versailles."
