A window air conditioner is a very effective way to cool a room for those on a tight budget. When considering windows air conditioning installation, Perth residents may be tempted to carry out the work themselves. For people that have a decent level of DIY knowledge, this is a project that is entirely possible. However, there are some problems that people need to be aware of before beginning the air conditioning installation. The most common errors that are made fall into three areas and paying attention to these areas is key. An incorrectly installed system can be dangerous or inefficient, so it’s important to get it right.
1. Get the Correct Sized Unit
Many people purchase a unit that is too small or too large for the job. In order to operate correctly a window air conditioner should have a cooling capacity of 20 BTU’s (British Thermal Units) per 0.093 sq metres of space in the room. If the unit is going to be used to cool a room with high ceilings or if there is strong direct sunlight the capacity may have to be larger to compensate. Many people are tempted to get a larger unit because larger equals better. Well in these circumstances that is not the case. An oversized unit will not cool the room any better than a unit of the correct size, and it will cost more to run to achieve the same result.
2. Correct Weight Distribution
When carrying out a windows air conditioning installation, many people simply open the window pop the unit in and close it again. This is a very dangerous practice and if the unit isn’t properly supported it could damage the window or even fall into or out of the window and injure someone. This is especially true of plastic windows that are unsuited to supporting these units. It’s a good idea to attach a baton of wood or in the case of a heavy unit metal brackets to the exterior and just below the window. This will help to support the unit and distribute the weight evenly.
3. Ensure the Unit is Level
An air conditioner works by removing water from the air to cool it down. This means that condensation is collected inside the unit during this process, and it is then drained via a hole located at the rear. Some people try to help this process along by installing their units on an outwards facing angle. This is unnecessary, and it can make the unit unstable and more likely to fall. It can also cause the condensation to drain into areas of the unit where it can cause damage. Instead, make sure that the unit is installed square to the window so that it can work as intended by the manufacturer.
As you can see a window air conditioning installation can be carried out by the layman.
