Culinary tourism is the latest trend that’s taking the travel world by storm. Food travel is a wonderful experience that lets one not only take in the sights of popular destinations but also gain deep insight and develop a better understanding of the culture of the people living there, with every cooking secret discovered and dish tasted. Below are 3 of the best places in Kerala that make for the perfect culinary vacation in God’s Own Country.
Kochi:
The vibrant city of Kochi is the historic centre of India’s spice trade and home to a variety of attractions. Visit Fort Kochi to see the famous Jewish synagogue, Matancherry Palace and the St. Francis Church. The market here sells a variety of spices that you can pick to take home with you. Some of the best dishes you should definitely try here include Syrian Christian delicacies like appams, or fluffy rice pancakes with meen moilee, a fish preparation made using coconut milk and fragrant spices. Don’t forget to visit the Chinese fishing nets during sunset. The silhouette of these huge manually operated structures against the sun dipping below the sea, painting everything a warm golden, is quite a sight to behold.
Thekkady:
Travel to Thekkady to feast your eyes on rolling tea estates, coffee and pepper plantations that dot the Cardamom hills. Visit one of the spice gardens here to encounter some wonderful tastes and aromas including vanilla and ginger. The regional dishes in Kerala count coconut oil, curd and grated coconut as their key ingredients. Sample the sambar with red rice and karimeen masala, which is a spicy fish curry and different ‘thorans’ or vegetables made with grated coconut. Meals are traditionally served on a banana leaf and accompanied with a variety of chutneys. As a sweet dish, payasam, a preparation of milk with sugar and vermicelli or milk with jaggery and rice is quite popular.
Kumarakom:
Think of Kerala and you’re bound to think of the backwaters. The villages along the backwaters have stayed much the same for decades and boats are used for everything from delivering post to transportation of goods and people. Kappa, or tapioca, cooked with turmeric and salt, is a great local favourite in Kerala and eaten with typical red fish curry or a spicy beef gravy. The people of Kerala are great meat eaters and you’ll often find duck and rabbit on restaurant menus and served at home, in addition to fish, chicken, beef and occasionally pork. As you roam the backwaters on a shikaara or even a houseboat, taking in the idyllic surroundings, see if you can stop in one of the village ‘thattakadas’ that serve delicious local delicacies like kappa-meen, Kerala beef fry, fried mussels, duck and rabbit curry. If you’re lucky you can even get a refreshing bottle of freshly tapped toddy. The fermented kind can be quite potent though, so be warned.
Once you’ve completed your culinary tour of Kerala, you can return home with a full stomach and wonderful memories.
