20th century art predominantly became known as — Modern art. The art at this era, in reality, began with modernism that already had set its footprint in the late 19th century. The 19th Century movements of Post Impressionism and Art Nouveau are often termed as the origination of the art movements of Fauvism in France and Die Brücke in Germany. The first Twentieth-Century arts of Fauvism introduced sharp non-figurative color into metaphoric painting. On the other hand, Die Brücke endeavored for emotional Expressionism.
Another important German group of this era was Der Blaue Reiter or "The Blue Rider" in Munich. Kandinsky used to lead this group. He related the blue rider representation to a spiritual abstract mystic art of the future. He was a pioneer artist of abstract art.
Another important 20th century art was Cubism generated by Picasso. He importantly rejected the artificial forms of the Renaissance and introduced numerous perceptions into a two-dimensional image. On the other hand Marcel Duchamp rejected conservative art styles in general and exhibited found objects. In 20th century, Futurism was another important art form that incorporated the portrayal of movements and the progress of the machine age.
In Russia, parallel movements were also witnessed, such as Suprematism, where Kasimir Malevich emphasized on abstract works, remarkably a black canvas. Mikhail Larionov’s Jack of Diamonds group was said to be expressionist in nature.
In 20th century, the remarkable art form of Dadaism gave way to Surrealism. In Surrealism, Freudian psychological theories proved instrumental to the portrayal of the dream and the unconsciousness in the art, which particularly reflected in the works of Salvador Dali.
The non-figurative art introduced by Kandinsky was preceded by the American Abstract Expressionist School of 1950s which included names like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.
The Pop Art movement of 1960s gave way to another trend and that was disconnection from the world of imagery. The originator of this trend is notably identified as Andy Warhol. He made hasty profit-making imagery as an essence of the Fine Art. He also minimized the role of the artist in the creation of arts by employing mechanical way of productions.
