Preakness next year will again be an enticing event with fresh new three year olds’ entry to the tournament. Majestic City and Creative cause who scorched the Del Mar Futurity scene and Overdriven who won the Grade 2 Sanford Stakes are three definite choices for the Preakness next year, provided they stay consistent in their performance. Then there are Union Rags closely followed by Currency Swap and Secret Circle pulling off impressive Beyer Speed Figures, guess their connections must be watchi

Who can we look forward to in the 2012 Preakness? It is a bit early to know for sure who can stretch out and who are merely sprinters, but lets take a look at some promising talents that we might end up seeing on Preakness day 2012.
Majestic City is set to make his next start in the September 7th Del Mar Futurity. He won the Grade 3 Hollywood Juvenile Championship in his last start. Before we even think about him being a Preakness horse, we need to know if he can run on the regular dirt. Both Hollywood Park and Del Mar Racetrack have synthetic surfaces.
Majestic City will go head to head with another promising horse in the Del Mar Futurity, Creative Cause, who was very impressive in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes on August 7th. He only received an 88 Beyer Speed Figure but he ran down his competition effortlessly and seemed to have plenty left in the tank.
Overdriven is one of the most promising horses from the East Coast, having won his maiden and most recently, the Grade 2 Sanford Stakes. He won his stakes debut in the Sanford by four emphatic lengths over Power World. He received a 93 Beyer for his effort.
Union Rags is another top horse from the East Coast, having taken the Three Chimney’s Saratoga Special (Grade 2) at Saratoga. The track was muddy for the race and he seemed to relish the offgoing, as he drew off to win easily by six lengths, despite bearing out in the stretch. It is clear that he is still quite green, but there is plenty of time to straighten him out between now and the 2012 Preakness Stakes.
Currency Swap scored an impressive win his debut at Saratoga on August 6th. He pulled away easily to win by five lengths. He also received the highest Beyer Speed Figure for a two year old for races at 6 ½ furlongs or longer, receiving a 98 figure.
Secret Circle is another horse that has not yet run in a stakes race but he was impressive in his maiden debut. He pulled off a 97 Beyer Speed Figure on July 23rd in a 5 ½ furlong race at Del Mar. He does seem to have the air of a sprinter rather than a route horse, and so we will need to see him at 6 ½ or 7 furlongs before we can get a handle on whether he is Preakness 2012 material or not.
