Debbie Bliss has a large range of yarns and the Amalfi yarn was launched for Spring / Summer 2010 and is a mix of cotton, viscose, linen and silk. When looking for yarns we appreciate that if can be very difficult to select the right one especially on the internet. So for that reason we are going to give you some more information on the Debbie Bliss Amalfi including what it is like to knit with.

The Amalfi Yarn

Firstly let’s look at the composition of the yarn. It is made up of 70% cotton, 15% Viscose, 10% linen and 5% silk. This combination makes it a very light weight yarn that is great for the spring and summer months. The silk also gives it a lovely sheen that makes it look more luxurious than your average cotton. The tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows on 4mm (US 6) needles makes it a perfect double knitting yarn and can be used to replace your usual double knitting cotton or wool. The composition of the yarn mean you can make garments that are great for the summer but also for the whole year. The use of linen and viscose in the yarn give it some more durability which mean it is very useful for making things like bags.

The Amalfi range comes in 12 fantastic colours that are very subtle and soft for the summer. So if you are looking to make something in cotton then this could be the perfect yarn for you to add a little bit extra with your garment.

Knitting with Amalfi

To be perfectly honest, when I first saw the Amalfi I was no overly impressed. I thought it looked nice but not anything special. That was until I knitted with it. So far I have made a summer hat and a small bag with the yarn and the garments look beautiful. The little bit of silk in the yarn just adds an extra element that makes it look rich and lovely.

So what was it actually like to knit with? Well when I first started I was a little unsure as there are a number of distinct strands that make up the yarn. This means that you need to be more careful to ensure you get all of the strands included in the stitch. Having said that, when I got used to it I found it very nice and easy to knit with. I was able to work more quickly than with other yarns and found that I knitted my hat in the space of just a day.

My Advice

If you like knitting and want to make a cotton garment then I would definitely recommend the Amalfi yarn. It was a great addition to the Debbie Bliss range and one that I sincerely hope she adds to. If there were more colours to it I could make a lot more out of it and would be knitting with it all the time, that is if there weren’t so many other things to knit!
