Few people realize exactly how much damage a nuisance animal can cause to their homes until after the damage is already done. When they call in a wild animal removal expert, they may have no idea of the difficult job that lies before that professional nor of the knowledge one must have to actually be a professional in this particular line of work.

Nuisance animals are wild animals that have adapted their habits to accommodate living with humans. Much to the homeowners’ dismay, they have learned that good sources of food are inside dumpsters and garbage cans. They have also learned that human shelter can be turned into their own shelters by way of basements, attics, under porches, eaves and other areas. Raccoons are one of the worst offenders, but there are plenty of other species that cause problems as well.
Despite their usefulness as mosquito killers, bats often turn into real nuisances. Rodents of all kinds can also cause destruction and spread disease. Small animals or large, their removal involves careful planning and knowledge of the animal’s habits.
Some of these nuisance animals can do considerable damage to a home. For example, raccoons are known to tear holes in roofs to get into the attics of homes. Not only do they damage the roofs, they also make huge messes. Their waste is unsanitary and can contaminate all areas where they leave it. They are even known to chew through telephone and electrical wires, not to mention stealing all the pet food left out for dogs and cats.
Raccoons do not only reside in attics. They have also been known to crawl under houses and wedge themselves between the walls to have their litters. These animals carry diseases and parasites that are potentially harmful to both humans and pets. They sometimes carry rabies and canine distemper. When humans breathe in the spores of raccoon roundworms, their lungs can become seriously infected.
Raccoons eat plants from people’s gardens such as melon, grapes and corn. They also kill chickens for food and eat their eggs as well. They can also do a lot of damage to pond wildlife such as fish and frogs and can upset a pond’s entire eco-balance.
Using guns to rid oneself of a raccoon problem can be risky and ineffective. However, trapping them has been known to work. The bad news is that raccoons are territorial, so as soon as one is removed, another one is likely to take its place. For these reasons, a combination of different things can be the best solution.
Begin by trapping raccoons that are already familiar with a given food source such as a garden or barn feed bin. Next, trap them on the outer perimeters of the area that they have been invading. At this point, it is good to install a motion detector and to put out a raccoon repellent close to their food sources. This can be effective in frightening away any raccoons that are not familiar with the food source. When these methods do not work, it is probably time to call in a wild animal removal service.
Wild animal removal services are largely misunderstood; in that they do not simply come in, kill the animals and leave. They are not just for the removal of raccoons, either. They are hired to remove all kinds of animals that are wreaking havoc on someone’s personal property.
The wild animal removal expert must be knowledgeable about the animals’ habits. He or she must possess certain specialized skills and to have undergone extensive training. This expert should also be aware of the risks inherent in the job and to know how to act fast and deal with unexpected circumstances and events. The wild animal removal expert is faced with difficult decisions regarding humane ways of disposing of animals or ways in which to safely relocate them. They must learn which equipment to use for specific jobs and to only use traps and certain other implements that are approved by the State Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. They must cut through a lot of red tape to perform their jobs effectively and professionally. In other words, their jobs are not easy.
There was a time when state and county agencies could afford to come in and take care of any wild nuisance animals that were causing problems to property or endangering its human or pet inhabitants. Those days are long gone. Now trained, licensed professionals perform these services. They also help homeowners take preventative measures to keep wild animal pests away.
