School has just started and with the amount of studying that every student has to do, most parents opt to purchase computers for their children to facilitate school work and provide access to a more varied range of educational tools. These days, however, because of the number of products available parents find themselves in a quandary as to the best choice in computing equipment. The popularity of netbooks over the past year has made it even more difficult to make this choice as there really are a lot of good, quality notebooks out in the market.

Netbooks

A netbook should be able to help out a student with school work especially if most of it involves simple computing tasks. A netbook is very capable of helping users do online research and perform word processing tasks, which is typically the type of activities that students do for school. Pricing for netbooks are quite friendly, with a lot of them costing less than a laptop or a desktop computer. Their portability also adds to the appeal as many children these days are into computers, they might want equipment that they can take along with them.

For more complex tasks, however, a netbook might not be a good idea. Tasks that involve heavy use of graphics and multimedia, for example will require a speedy processor, an edge that a desktop certainly has over a netbook.

Desktops

Price is also a major draw of desktops. A unit that costs around $500 to $1000 will already include a host of excellent features including a fast performing processor, more than sufficient storage space ideal for those fond of multimedia and respectable graphics capabilities. Screen size is also an issue. For some, viewing webpages and documents over a netbook can be quite a chore because of the limited screen real estate.

The beauty of desktops also lies in the fact that they are easily expandable. You can upgrade your unit for a few hundred bucks and acquire more modern features without necessarily having to replace your old unit altogether.

The Bottom Line

Both netbooks and desktops have their advantages and disadvantages and the choice still depends on personal preference and what the unit will be used for. To make sure you get a unit that’s the most suitable for you, assess your needs and what you want your computer to be able to do for you. If you opt for a desktop, remember to purchase a model that has an excellent processor.

Most desktop PCs come with built-in graphics capabilities that should be able to satisfy multimedia requirements but if your child requires more high quality viewing, there are a lot of graphics card brands available in the market.

Make sure to scout around for the best deal, not necessarily the cheapest. Some retailers have a practice of bundling in a lot of useless software onto a PC and this is usually a trade-off with some cheaper desktops. These software mostly just take up space and in some cases are harmful to the unit so make sure sales agents thoroughly explain what you’re getting for your money.
