Although most of us are aware of the multifarious issues pertaining to the energy crises, very few of us make an effort to do anything in this regard. The impending energy crisis worldwide can only be countered if we all work together to conserve the remaining few sources of energy. Solar energy is one of the cheapest and cleanest alternative sources of energy.
The sun is one of the most renewable, eco-friendly, abundant, readily and freely available natural pools of energy. The only expense you need to incur for using solar energy is the cost of buying and setting up the equipment. But, the solar installation cost incurred can be recovered unbelievably fast as it can reduce your energy bills by up to 80%. Moreover, solar power systems can also reduce the emission of carbon dioxide considerably and hence reduce pollution. In addition, the use of solar energy is not dependent on the demand and supply of fuel.
There are various ways of collecting solar energy. These are:
Flat Plate Collectors – They comprise of a system of insulation and pipes that use the heat through the water heated in the pipes. These are best for use in swimming pools in homes and schools. Although they do not produce a large amount of heat, they are very cheap.
Focusing Collectors – These consist of movable mirrors, called Heliostats that are move to track the sun and make it more efficient. They can generate a temperature of up to 4000 degrees Celsius. Such a temperature can be used for in solar furnaces for industrial use generating electricity and research. The extremely high temperatures are focused on boilers for producing steam.
Solar Power Electricity – Solar energy can be used to generate solar power electricity by using photovoltaic cells or focusing collectors. PV cells are thin semiconductors that can directly convert the solar radiation into solar power electricity.
Solar Distillation – This process is very much like the flat plate collectors, the only difference being that instead of providing hot water, it provides distilled water. Seawater is stored in tanks, which is heated with the help of solar energy. The water evaporates into vapors leaving the impurities behind. The vapours then condense into pure water that is store in reservoirs for future use.
Solar Panels – These are mounted on the roof so as to absorb solar power and convert it into solar electricity. This electricity can be used anywhere in the house. They are effective even on cloudy days, but do not produce any energy at night.
