Tawang the Lhasa of India is situated in the eastern most part of India in Arunachal Pradesh. Tawang the 16th district of Arunachal Pradesh is bounded by China in North, Bhutan in South – West and Sela ranges separate West Kamend district in the West. The area of the district is approximately 2085 sq. km.
According to local people the name Twang was given Mera Lama in the 17th century. This tiny district is bestowed with snow capped mountains and frozen lakes, ancient old monasteries to gompas, there are several tourist attractions located in Tawang.

Twang monastery the second oldest monastery of the world is the major tourist attraction of Twang. It is said that Twang monastery is the second largest monastery after Lhasa. This 400 years old monastery is located at an altitude of 3,000 meter above the sea level and also known by the name of Golden Namgyal Lhastse. There are 17 other small monasteries in the district which is controlled by Twang monastery.

For the people of Monpas tribe of Arunachal Pradesh Tawang Monastery is one of the most significant parts of their social and religious life. Since 400 years there are lamas residing in the monastery who are completely devoted Buddhism and they spread Love, Learning and Purity of life. This fortified complex covers an area of 135 square meters surrounded by a wall composed of 610 meters long. There are 65 residential buildings and 10 other structures inside the buildings. There is a vast library in which is contains some of the most rare books and other valuable old scriptures mainly Kanjur and Tanjur numbering 850 bundles which dates back to 17th century A.D.

Losar and torgya are the two major religious festivals of the Monpas. This festival is celebrated once annually of which Losar is celebrated in the evening of a New Year. Torgya three years, the festival is celebrated Dungyur. Both these festivals is celebrated in the premises of the Tawang Monastery courtyard wearing traditional dress and performed with great enthusiasm.

Twang is the land of Monpas located at a height of 10,000 ft from the sea level. It is a major kernel of Buddhist learning and is chiefly well-known for its 400 year old monastery (Tawang Monastery), one of the best known and largest monastery not only in India but also in the world and visitor visits this place by known travel in India. It is said that during ancient time the place was a center of tantric religion. Besides being a religious center the district is also well known for its scenic beauty which enchants every traveler be it domestic traveler or international traveler making their India tour packages in Goa worth one and memorable one a tour which they will remember in entire life.

The district is inhabited by Monpa tribe except Shyo village which is dominated by people of Tibetian origin people who migrated to India from Tibet. The Monpas tribes belonged to Mongoloid race who are off well built, fair in complexion and small in height. These tribes are mainly farmers who practice jum cultivation. There main means of livelihood is agriculture and animal husbandry.

There are many natural lakes and mountain ranges and most of which are known to be sacred and are historically important since time immoral. To name a few them are Pangang Teng Tso Lake, Shonga-tser Lake and Banga Jang Lake and Ghesila Range and Gorichen Peak are some of the popular mountain ranges of Tawang. If you are adventure lovers than these mountain ranges are the ideal for trekking and rock climbing. There are also numbers of snow feed waterfalls, which is known for their white milky water and giving most beautiful views which one can ever dream off. BongBong Waterfall and Bap Teng Kang Waterfall are some of the best waterfall. On your way to Twang you can also visit Sela Pass, Tawang War Memorial and Jaswant Ghar and make your travel in India a most memorable one. One can reach to this beautiful hill station via Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. After crossing Assam one has to heed towards Bhalukpong in West Kameng via Bomdila and Sela Pass one can reach Tawang by road.
