After a lovely warm autumn, weather forecasters in the UK are warning that the country is heading towards a very cold winter.
According to a recent article in the Daily Mail, the unusually mild weather will soon disappear and temperatures will dip below zero within the next two or three weeks. It is predicted that the UK could be dealing with temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius by December according to weather experts. Some forecasters even fear that temperatures will plunge as low as -20.
A Perfect Storm is Brewing
According to weather forecasters, the Mild Atlantic air will be blocked by high pressure systems which are currently overtop of Britain. This means that the whole country will face freezing cold conditions, even in the southern areas. There will also be a huge amount of heavy snow as well as potential serious transport disruptions.
Parts of the UK are already starting to see snow, as two inches recently fell in the Cairngorms in Scotland. The rest of the country is being warned to brace itself for snowy conditions starting at the beginning of November.
Preparing For the Freezing Weather
All over Britain, preparations are underway for the anticipated cold snap. The councils have ordered approximately 1.4 million tonnes of salt for spreading on the roadways to improve traction on the icy surfaces. Many council authorities faced criticism last winter as motorists battled dangerous roads with slippery ice and became stranded.
The UK Government is also introducing a Cold Weather Plan, in response to the 25,000 extra deaths which were caused by winter in the UK last year. The Met Office will be sending out extreme weather alerts to the NHS, social services and other agencies.
The Cold Weather Plan will contain advice for individuals most vulnerable to the cold, such as elderly people, encouraging them to be protected against flu and to keep their homes heated to a minimum of 21C during daytime hours and 16C throughout the night. If the temperature is any lower the risk of heart complications, strokes and breathing issues increase in older people and those with long-term illnesses.
Stocking Up on Home Heating Oil
As the temperature drops, those who live in rural areas and rely on kerosene home heating oil to heat their homes will need to stock up on their oil supply. The lower the temperatures plunge, the more kerosene they will need to heat their homes.
If you use kerosene as home heating oil, you will save a lot of money by ordering a shipment of oil in advance before the temperatures start to drop in the next few weeks. Once the temperature becomes colder, the demand will increase for this type of heating oil as many people will place their orders at the last minute. The higher demand will result in higher prices, so by ordering before the rush you will be able to save yourself money as well as keep warm and cosy throughout the upcoming cold snap.
Weather experts in the UK are predicting freezing temperatures, which means it would be wise to stock up on kerosene heating oil before the big chill.
