So you want to become a goods driver. Or maybe you want to drive passengers to their desired destinations. Whichever you prefer, you must firstly undertake various training and attain certain qualifications allowing you to pursue this as your chosen career.
For some people, it’s a dream to become a goods driver; whilst you are indeed working and transporting cargo, at the same time you also have the enjoyment of knowing that you are being given the opportunity to travel across the entire country (sometimes even further) and being paid for the privilege. If this is the career for you and you are interested in how to become a goods driver, then you must be aware that in order to transport certain loads, all drivers are required to undertake various training and attain qualifications.

For instance, with a number of driving jobs comes the responsibility of having to transport dangerous goods. ADR is the term which relates to the European agreement administering the international transportation of dangerous goods via road and in order to do this, you would require a certificate which is issued by the DVLA; the Driver Training Certificate. This would be awarded to you once you had successfully completed a set of exams in a course approved by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The ADR training will give you the opportunity to fully appreciate the danger of the goods that are being carried and it will explain the duties belonging to you under the various pieces of relevant legislation. Finally and perhaps, most importantly, the ADR training will teach you what course of action you would need to take in an emergency. For all companies looking to transport dangerous goods, it is also a legal requirement to assign a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA).

The main duties of a DGSA involve monitoring the compliance with all rules involved in allowing the transport of dangerous goods, giving counsel to their business on the subject and preparing an annual report to management on the activities of the business in the transport of dangerous goods. If you wish to become your company’s DGSA, you are required to successfully pass a set of exams administered by the SQA. The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is the qualification that must be achieved by a person who is intending to drive vehicles that exceed 3.5 tonnes; this qualification is relatively new and mainly relates to professional bus, coach and lorry drivers.

Once achieved, the qualification will help you to improve and develop your knowledge and skills on driving before and throughout your working life. Ultimately though, it is thought that it will help to improve all road safety as drivers will be better qualified and therefore, be safer in their journeys. If you will be managing any medium and/or large goods vehicles, then you are required by law to have a Freight CPC. In order to attain this qualification, you must effectively complete a case study and sit a set of examinations with OCR.

In addition to the training required for being a goods driver, anyone wishing to drive vehicles that transport passengers must also attain certain qualifications. A Passenger CPC is the qualification required in this instance and again, this is achieved by passing a set of exams. Transport training can help you on your way to becoming a fully competent and qualified driver, enabling you to enter into the career you’ve always wanted. You may choose to transport passengers to their desired destinations. Alternatively, you may choose to become a goods driver and get that opportunity to travel the country. You never know, you may even get the chance to visit your desired destination.
