“California”. Just saying the name alone conjures up all sorts of images. Whether you live there, have visited before or dreamt about taking a tour of California, everyone has a different idea of what the state of California entails. For some, it’s theme parks galore, with Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, Sea World and of course, Disneyland, calling California home. For others, it’s the beaches where you can soak up some rays while hearing the waves crashing that come to mind. For others, it’s the idea of the mountains that’s most appealing. Hiking high above the city in the mountains of Santa Monica or maybe skiing atop one of the many local ranges has people flocking from all around to enjoy the activities California has to offer. Few people realize the vast history of California and how this great state came about. Check out these interesting little tidbits about California:

• California became a U.S. territory in 1847 when Mexico surrendered it to John C. Fremont. On January 24th, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill kicking off the California Gold Rush, which resulted in a huge boost in population for California.

• California’s motto is one word: Eureka (“I have found it”). This comes from the discovery of gold in 1848 and the Gold Rush that followed.

• California’s ten largest cities by population are Los Angeles (3,844,829); San Diego (1,255,540); San Jose (912,332); San Francisco (739,426); Long Beach (474, 014); Fresno (461,116); Sacramento (456,441); Oakland (395,274); Santa Ana (340,368); Anaheim (331,804).
