Ford unveiled the first generation Galaxy back in 1995; it is large 5 door Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV). The first generation Galaxy was a product of a joint venture between Ford and VW called AutoEuropa. The products of the joint production were the Ford Galaxy, the VW Sharan and the SEAT Alhambra. The Galaxy even used the VW VR6 engine along with many mechanical VW parts.
The 2006 Mark 3 Galaxy is completely independent of VW, Ford had sold its stake in AutoEurope in 2005. All Galaxy production shifted from the AutoEuropa plant in Portugal to Ford’s plant in Genk, Belgium where the Mondeo is also produced.
The new Ford Galaxy in Scotland comes with five engine choices, two of which are petrol and three diesel. The smallest petrol engine is the 1.6 litre EcoBoost and then there is the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine. The diesel line up has three variants of the same diesel engine available with 113, 138 or 161 bhp. If you are going to drive around a lot with a full house then it is probably best to avoid the small 113bhp model.
The mark 3 Galaxy has started life off very well, Europe’s largest taxi firm Addison Lee has just taken delivery of the first of its 1,200 Galaxy models. Addison Lee fleet manager Rob Daniels said: "We spent three months assessing vehicles and talking to manufacturers; the Ford Galaxy emerged as the best package for us on many levels, not only financially. It is safe, offers low emissions and is economical to run."
