Trevor explains that the Bentley, once a popular choice of racing car in the 1920’s is now popular when it comes to hiring wedding cars in Northern Ireland.

The History of the Bentley

Bentley Motors Ltd produced the first Bentley, a 3 litre four-cylinder car in 1919 and several versions were produced and sold from 1921 to 1927. Between 1924 and 1930, the Bentley became a popular choice of racing car securing many victories at the prestigious Le Mans Race.

In 1931 the company was taken over by Rolls-Royce who introduced the 3.5 litre in 1933, a sports version of the Rolls-Royce 20/25. Later, in 1936 the Rolls-Royce 25/30 engine was fitted and known as the 4.25 litre.

Prior to the Second World War a few Mark V models were also built. Post-war, the Mark VI was introduced. These post World War II Bentley cars were factory fitted with steel coach work.

In 1951 Bentley’s were fitted with a 4.5 litre engine and some versions were designated the R-Type, which also featured a larger engine and boot. The Bentley R Type models are 200 inches in length, 69 inches wide, with a height of 64.5 inches. Rolls Royce produced around 2500 of these beautiful vehicles between 1952 and 1955, following which the S series was introduced.

The luxury of these Bentley R Type models is experienced by many bridal parties in Northern Ireland as they travel between venues on their big day. R J Poots & Co, Dromore own a 1953 Black Bentley finished with brown leather interior, and a 1954 Silver Bentley with grey leather interior, finished in Oxford blue over silver, only a few of which are available in Northern Ireland. Both vehicles are in immaculate condition.

One happy couple who travelled in the black Bentley wedding car supplied by R J Poots & Co, Dromore are Colin & Sarah Cusick, from Belfast. Sarah said, “We chose the black Bentley as our wedding car because of its elegance. It is simply beautiful both inside and out and was very comfortable. It looked really well in our wedding photos!”
