Tourism is one of the major industries of Spain. The country is blessed with beautiful nature and some of the most ancient buildings. The ancient town of Morella is one such place which is popular for its historic buildings and splendid environment. This town of Castellon province is very well connected by road.
Brief history:
According to historians the town was under the occupation of Greeks, Romans and Moors. It was during the 17th century the city witnessed outbreak of plague and the epidemic lasted for almost two decades. Then some religious minded people brought the statue of Virgin Mary from a sanctuary from Vallivana located about 24 kms away. They took the statue in procession through the city and thereafter the town was free from the epidemic. There after the practice of Sexenni festival came into being and it is celebrated to express thanks to Virgin Mary who protected the state from such serious epidemic. This festival of Sexenni is held once in every six years and it is held during the month of August. Many cultural festivals are also held during the nine day festival.
Places of interest:
The city of Morella is fortified by stone wall and it has six exit points. Historians say that the wall has been built during the medieval period so as to protect the city from enemies. The castle situated on the top of the adjoining hill is also believed to have been built during the medieval period. From the top of the castle, tourists can have a glimpse of the beautiful natural sceneries. History also speaks of many wars being fought to take control of the castle. Celts, Romans, Moors, Iberians have all fought for this castle. The castle has been rebuilt and renovated after each war. The walls around the castle are called as artillery wall from where the archers would aim their arrows at the enemy. There are steps to lead the soldier to the top of the wall which is wide enough for the soldier to move about freely.
According to anthropologists, Morella had large population of Dinosaurs. This is better explained in the museum ‘museo Tiempo de Dinosaurious’. The Museo Tiempo de Historia is the museum set apart to provide a glimpse of the history of Morella.
Morella is the ideal place to shop. The town is famous for producing some of the works of traditional arts and artifacts. There are many hotels and restaurants which serve the tourists some of the traditional recipes of Morella.
