The Japanese earthquakes and Tsunami have affected millions of people, not just those living in the affected areas but those with connections in the country too. Toyota and Honda were massively affected; they had to halt production in Japan as well as the UK due to a shortage of parts that are made in Japan. Nissan was not as badly affected as it does a lot of its production with other European manufacturers.
As a gesture of goodwill Nissan has loaned out ten Nissan NV200 Combi taxis to the areas affected by the natural disaster. Nissan is doing this free of charge to help improve public access to transportation in areas which have been severely affected by the recent major earthquake and natural disasters.
The NV200 Combi taxis will be given to taxi companies have been designated for this role by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) in association with the "Utilization and demonstration project of new easy access vehicles in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake".
The taxi service is open to everyone regardless of sex, age and ability. The aim of the campaign is to get everyone moving, which includes adults, children and wheelchair users. Speaking to a Nissan dealer in Kent we found out that the whole company was behind this idea and think it’s an excellent way to show their affections.
Nissan Corporate Vice President Hideto Murakami, who is responsible for the Global LCV Business Unit said, “We are proud to support the MLIT project by providing Nissan’s NV200 Combi Taxis. Our hope is that they will be used to help people in the affected area and, as we go forward, lead to widespread adoption of the Universal Design Taxi nationwide.”
