Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and among its other sporting connections are its two Premier League football teams, Manchester United and Manchester City which are known all over the world as one of the best and leading football teams.
Attractions
Manchester – Museum of Science and Industry - This industrial museum on Liverpool Road, informs the visitor about a large number of technical advances and innovations. It has 12 galleries and was erected on the site of the world's oldest railroad station. In Power Hall we find old steam locomotives, and veteran cars which were manufactured in Manchester (including the Belsize motor car, 1912; Rolls Royce, 1904; Crossley Shelsey 15.7 hp saloon, 1929).
The John Rylands Library – This library was founded in 1653 and has over five million books and manuscripts. It is housed in a neo-Gothic building to the southwest of Chetham's Hospital in Deansgate.
Marton Tourism – The tiny market town of Marton with notable church (one of the oldest in Europe) is located near Congleton (26 km south of Manchester). The Church of St James and St Paul was founded in 1343 in Marton. It is one of the preferred tourist attraction is Manchester.
Chinatown - It is the colorful home of the largest Chinese communities in Great Britain, it is located near City Arty Gallery. The richly decorated Chinese arched gateway which leads into this little district is especially striking. Many shops and restaurants offering a wide range of culinary delicacies (especially from Hong Kong and Peking) have established here, Chinese handicrafts can also be found at the Chinese Arts Centre in Charlotte Street.
Transport facilites
Manchester is very well connected by air, rail and bus service. Manchester is served by Manchester Airport, which is the 4th busiest airport in UK in terms of passenger numbers. Manchester is 17th busiest airport in Europe. Manchester has very good train service.
In terms of passengers, Manchester Piccadilly is one of the busiest English railway stations outside London. The city's other main railway station is Manchester Victoria, this mainly serves destinations to north of Manchester. Manchester was the first city in the UK to acquire a modern light rail tram system when the Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992.
Manchester City has one of the most extensive bus networks outside London with over 50 bus companies operating in the city region. An extensive canal network is also available in Manchester which is mainly used for leisure by tourist.
