Constipation is becoming more common as research is suggesting there could be as many as nearly 3 million people suffering in the UK every month, and many are suffering in silence, as this common condition is embarrassing for many of its sufferers and causes much discomfort. As everybody is different then so are toilet habits and for some that means going daily, but for some that may be every few days and for children several times a day. What is important is to understand that irregular trips can become problematic leading to other conditions such as haemorrhoids or bowel diseases. Not taking regular trips to the loo can lead to harmful toxins building up and the pressure put onto the digestive system can ultimately make it difficult for important nutrients from foods to be absorbed. The most common symptoms are dry, hard, lumpy stools which can make going to the toilet become less frequent and very uncomfortable. Other symptoms include bloating which is a common complaint, feeling nauseous as well as having stomach aches or cramps. Many suffer loss of appetite and this would be of special of concern if the sufferer is a child as children may be too young to communicate specific symptioms.
There are many things that can be of help to sufferers and can be included in the daily routine with little thought, such as chewing food long enough, to ensure the saliva containing active enzymes starts the digestion process effectively, so do not eat food on the go. Eat fresh, as fresh food helps to keep digestive enzymes at good levels. Eating red meat and processed foods such as pasta and white bread should be limited and encourage the family to have more fruit and vegetables as they contain good amounts of soluble fibre, meaning a more gentle effect on the bowels. Dairy foods however can affect digestion so be careful of mucus and get essential calcium from green leafy vegetables or a calcium supplement. Stools should be kept moist so drinking lots of water is important, and it is better to drink water 30 minutes before a meal but not during, as it can slow down digestion by diluting the enzymes.
To combat constipation and bring constipation relief senna can be very effective as it is a natural laxative, which for the short term can be helpful. Senna is an ingredient in many OTC (Over the Counter) laxative treatments. Senokot contains senna and is a major brand available for sale at chemist.net along with many other brands such as Dulcolax, Dulcoease and Ex-lax. Many products have a dual effect in that they help to soften the stool and as well as help the sufferer to pass a stool. Psyllium or ispaghula husks in the form of a powder by brands such as Fybogel are popular and may also be taken to help the stools to maintain moisture, thereby staying soft and easier to pass on going to the toilet. Probiotic supplements are helpful too in ensuring that there is enough good bacteria in the gut and digestion is not sluggish, supplements such as Life’s-Biotic can be taken on a daily basis, and exceeds the daily recommended intake as you should take a minimum of 1 billion bacteria per day. If good bacteria gets low symptoms may include bloating, wind, foul smelling stools and even body odour and smelly feet can occur.
As constipation cases are growing the condition is now being addressed through better awareness, and education regarding culprits so the outlook is more positive for this embarrassing condition. Sufferers regularly become embarrassed with regard to their long trips to the toilet, and smelly stools so improving the diet and regularly drinking water through the day can be subtle changes but can bring big differences to health and wellbeing. All experiences of constipation can vary so it is important to recognise which are the triggers and what is the natural rhythm for them, and put into practice strategies to avoid them and to implement the remedies to help.
