What does your Lacoste bedding have to do with alligators, tennis balls and musketeers?
|
The explanation makes entertaining and informative reading; it outlines, also, the story behind one of the world’s great commercial success stories – one that had its origins in the sporting arena, not on the boardroom table.
Six years after that historical victory, and having designed many tennis shirts for his own use, Lacoste Polo Shirt was seeking to capitalise on the alligator motif and to make some commercial gain from his success. He teamed up, therefore, with Andre Gillier, proprietor of France’s biggest knitwear manufacturer, and proceeded to turn out a whole new range of men’s shirts for tennis, golf, sailing and polo. The weave was different and the comfort vastly improved upon from traditional sports shirts, and the Lacoste name was instantly bound for fame and fortune.
Lacoste went on to expand into perfumery, socks and shoes, eye-wear, bags and accessories – and the bedding for which its fresh colours, patterns and designs are so in keeping with the Lacoste philosophy. Lacoste bedding is high-end targeted, so it is not cheap, but neither do you get for your dollar anything that looks as if it came from an outlet store. Lacoste bedding is one of those few products that does stand out for what it is without depending on an obvious label.
Ninety years ago, Rene Lacoste was the darling of the French tennis circuit, and in 1927 he – with his team-mates, who were dubbed the Musketeers – relieved the Americans, for the first time ever, of their grip on the Davis Cup. Lacoste had made a wager with the team captain, who told him: “You win a very important match for France, and I will buy you an alligator skin suitcase, oui?” Lacoste accepted with alacrity, the American press immediately nick-named him The Alligator, and after that Davis Cup win Lacoste’s friend Robert George drew a small alligator that became a motif on the famous Frenchman’s shirt and the foundation of today’s huge fashion industry.
Long before you see the alligator, you can pretty well recognise Lacoste bedding at a glance by the bold colour matches, assertive styles and designs, all achieved with a certain simplicity that obviates the complex “chocolate box comfy” concepts of our seniors’ era. Curiously – and it might not be purely coincidence, considering Rene Lacoste’s origins – many of the designs on Lacoste bedding are quite “rural French” in their overtones, with a sunny morning rustic feel to them.
On-line consumer research has accorded Lacoste Men Polo and Lacoste bedding the highest possible rating, so its purchase can confidently be assumed to be an investment in comfort. Soft twill weave with pure cotton help the Lacoste construction, with occasional corduroy, cotton canvas and cotton knit incorporated in the subtlest manner.
So while there are so many celebrities, sportsmen in particular, wearing or enjoying Lacoste in one form or another, is their endorsement important? “We don’t really care about personalities,” says Lacoste Women Polo designer Christophe Lemaire. “We feel it’s a stupid game to play. There are so many famous people (into) Lacoste anyway, we don’t need to pretend or show off.”
