Many rural households in the UK use home heating oil such as kerosene to power the central heating systems in their houses. An official watchdog is advising that these homeowners stock up on their heating oil before the prices go through a significant hike.

There has been a spike in heating costs throughout recent years and according to Consumer Focus the households who leave their heating oil orders to the last minute are risking higher prices and much longer delivery times.

Rural Households Struggling With “Fuel Poverty”

According to Consumer Focus, approximately one million households in England which are not powered by gas heating face what is known as “fuel poverty”. This means that they have to spend more than 10% of their income just to pay their household energy bills. It is often a big struggle for people who live off the mains gas network to keep their homes warm. In the past few years as the cost of heating oil for homes during the coldest months of the year has steadily increased, this has had a significant impact on household budgets.

Tips to Beat the High Prices

How does Consumer Focus advise homeowners to combat the rising prices? Their tip is to buy oil as early as possible in order to avoid the higher prices at the last minute. Data from previous winters has proven that it is advantageous to stock up on heating oil in advance of the winter. When the winter has already begun, suppliers will have limited delivery capacity. Ordering oil later in the season means that you will have longer delivery times and there is a higher risk that the cold weather and the snow will increase the demand and disrupt the delivery.

Buying in Bulk is a Smart Move

They also advise buying oil in bulk which will reduce the overall cost. Households might even consider ordering bulk amounts of fuel to split with their neighbour in order to increase the savings even more. Many groups of people who live in rural areas have formed “Oil Clubs” and get together to split the cost of large bulk orders of domestic heating oil. These Oil Clubs can have a few members or sometimes even hundreds and their collective purchasing power usually brings them savings of more than 10%.

Using Less Fuel

Consumers should also be looking into ways that they can reduce their energy consumption and make their home as efficient as possible, including adding better insulation, turning down the thermostat, installing energy efficient heaters and boilers and upgrading to double glazing windows. They should also ensure that they are claiming all of the tax benefits and grants which they might be entitled to.

These are just a few ways that rural households can combat the rising prices for domestic heating oil such as kerosene.
