Muthanga, Periyar, Thattekad and Silent Valley are some of the famous wildlife sanctuaries and national parks of Kerala. Out of these, Periyar wildlife sanctuary is situated in Thekkady. Periyar wildlife sanctuary is declared a Tiger reserve. There is an artificial lake surrounding the sanctuary formed because of Mulla Periyar dam. You can have a boat ride in the lake savoring wildlife and surrounding landscape. Thekkady is the only place in India where you can relish wildlife from the safety of a boat. The most prominent attraction is herds of elephant bathing in the lake.
Backwaters are a singular Kerala occurrence and if you miss it, the Kerala trip can be treated as incomplete. The backwaters make for exciting landscape and cruises savoring this setting are truly memorable. Backwater cruises can be had in Alleppey, Kochi, Kollam and Kumarakom.
Houseboats are the present poster boys of backwater tourism. They are incarnations of erstwhile “Kettuvallams”, up to date, modern and luxurious.
