The British car maker Jaguar decided to enter the competitive premium executive car segment in 2001 with the launch of its X Type. The Jaguar X Type was up against the likes of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C Class. The X Type was built alongside the Land Rover Freelander in the Halewood plant, near Liverpool.
You may have heard a lot of rumours that the Jaguar X Type is in fact just a dressed up Ford Mondeo. To some extent this is true, both cars use the same Ford platform, but the Jaguar only shares 15% of the Ford Mondeo design.
Currently the X Type is only available with two engine choices, a 2.1 litre V6 petrol and a 2.2 litre Diesel with 154 and 143 bhp respectively. On its launch it was available with a 2.5 litre and a 3.0 litre petrol engine, with 193 and 228 bhp respectively. Since 2008 there are two transmission options a 5 speed manual and a 6 speed automatic. A new Jaguar X Type is planned, but it is unlikely to be launched until 2014.
The X Type looks and feels like a Jaguar, its twin headlights, long bonnet and boot make it look like a classic Jag. The inside of all X Types are very plush, with leather and wood – the sport trim models look very contemporary and stylish.
With its excellent driving characteristics, solid build and reliable engines the Jaguar X type is a cheaper alternative to a BMW 3 Series.
