Since the never-ending scandal of traces of horsemeat being detected in beef products, food safety guidelines have been altered and have been made a lot stricter so this sort of outbreak doesn’t occur. Yet, the question remains: how do we know what’s in our freezer is what it is on the label?
Check the Date
One simple solution is to always check the sell-by-date on every product you pick up. Generally, a product with a sell by date between 6-24 months is the best time period, as it gives you as a customer plenty of time and warning to discard the product if some remain before the product expires.
Products with a sell by date between 3-6 months could mean that it has had time to develop bacteria within the product that we can’t see, such as salmonella in fish (both frozen and fresh).
You Have Two Choices: Fridge or Freezer?
When buying meat products, you have to make sure which beef product you’re putting in which storage appliance. If you know you’re going to use it within the next 48 hours of purchase – put it in the fridge. This way, you know that you don’t need to defrost the product and there are no bacteria; although any is dissolved in hot water or in hot temperatures.
If, for example, you’re buying a turkey for Christmas early on in the year, if you are so organised, then putting it in the fridge is simply a silly idea as bacteria will develop over time so it has to go in the freezer.
A word of warning – if you pick up a product in the freezer which has an expired sell by date, it doesn’t matter, as you can still cook and consume it as normal.
Pick the Right Freezer
The most important thing to do is pick the right freezer. If you have a big family and you require quite a bit of shopping, a freezer with between six to eight compartments is a lot more sensible then a freezer with three to four compartments. This way, you can fit more shopping in and the food will not become cramped and sometimes will not freeze as effectively.
Some people decide to have a large fridge but instead have something called a ‘chest’ freezer. A chest freezer is a large, ice-cold freezer in the shape of a cube which has a very large interior depth. This allows for a larger quantity of food to be stored and therefore the food doesn’t become cramped and can be a handy freezer if you’re moving home and need a ‘starter’ freezer.
The great advantage of chest freezers is that you can store a greater amount of food in your home; however it is imperative that you check the best before date on each product regularly to ensure all your food is fresh and still edible.
