Istanbul is a big city, an important sea port, the biggest cultural center of Turkey. It is situated on both shores of Bosporus, which unites the Black sea and the Sea of Marmara. Bosporus is the border of two parts of the world – Europe and Asia, and that's why Istanbul is located in the both parts at the same time. Modern Istanbul remains the center of cultural and spiritual life of Turkey, its biggest tourist area, situated on the border of Europe and Asia.

Istanbul is a city-museum with buildings from different times: it is the famous Bosporus bridge above the Black Sea, symbolizing the peaceful relations between Europe and Asia; it is the Hippodrome, the center of political and sports events in the ancient times; they are Topkapi palace, famous Hagia Sophia, beautiful Blue Mosque, Yedikule fortress, and many other buildings.

Modern Istanbul is a big megalopolis, where there are combined modern buildings and ancient architecture, which create a unique coloring, people can get across of only here. It is a big sea port, where millions of tourists and businessmen come from all over the world.

In the old city, on Covered Bazaar, in the labyrinth of streets and passages there are more than 4000 small shops. The names of places remind of days of old, when each type of trade had its own small district: jewelers' street, street of carpet sellers, street of skullcap makers.

Turkish craftsmen can offer you presents and souvenirs: world-renowned carpets, hand-made ceramics, articles of copper and brass, hemp pipes. The glitter of golden jewels dazzles the passers-by. Goods from skin and chamois are very popular. In Bedestan (a part of the Covered Bazaar) there are many antiques. If you go to Spice Bazaar (Misir Carsisi) near Eminonu mosque, you find yourself in the Eastern world. Sultanahmet market is the second shopping center of the old city. The branches of the most stylish shops are in big shopping centers. On the flea markets of Istanbul there can be found ancient as well as up-to-date goods.

If you visit Istanbul in summer, it is a must to go to the Princes Islands, situated in the Sea of Marmara, as the residents of big megalopolises do. The islands are connected with the continent by permanent ferry line. The landscape of the islands is very beautiful: they are buried in verdure, the air is fresh and clean. On the islands there is no transportation, and people use bikes, horses, and donkeys, or walk along the coast, where there are numerous tavern and small restaurants, where you can eat and drink.

The coast of Istanbul is one of the most popular recreation places, and the secret of its success is in the wide choice of hotels and prices, and favorable climate conditions, which makes the recreation possible all the year around. There is a chain of world-renowned hotels, but it is better and cheaper to choose 3 or 4 star hotels of Taksim, Laleli or Sultanahmet, specially if you have a big group of tourists.

Istanbul gives the possibility to feel the rhythm of the ancient history and mysterious East, to see the old traditions of hospitality and the last achievements of the tourist industry.
