Now in its fourth iteration, the Mondeo has been one of Ford’s flagships ever since it first rolled out of the factory and onto the roads in 1993. It wasn’t just public roads that the Modeo dominated back then, either – it was also a powerhouse on the race track, taking Paul Radisich to the FIA World Touring Car Cup in both 1993 and 1994, and finishing first, second and third in the British Touring Car Championship in 2000.

It also has more than two dozen awards to its credit, including this year’s What Car? prize for Best Family Car and Estate Car. The current Estate is particularly worth a look, offering all the refinement and driveability of previous Modeos, but with additional enhancements such as more boot space. It’s encouraging that Ford doesn’t rest on its laurels – even when it has the best car in its class, it still looks for ways to make it better.

You still want to make sure you find a good one that’s been well looked-after though, which is why it’s best to talk to a specialist dealer such as Belfast Car Dealerships rather than gamble on something that might have a few hidden glitches. They recently had a neat petrol version with 47,000 miles on the clock and only one previous owner for less than £3500.
