Students often start their preparation for this exam well in advance. A whopping 4, 85,000 students appeared for this examination in 2011. This figure went up by 6.5% compared to the previous year. The competition is high not only among the students but also the coaching classes, which have grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. A two year course for the IIT JEE starting 2 years before the actual exam is the most popular among the students. These courses for the IIT JEE 2012 have begun in 2010.

The IITs have seen had some of the most famous people from all walks of life as their alumni. Many successful industrialists, entrepreneurs, scientists, technical experts in international companies have been IIT pass outs. A large number of companies throng these institutes on the first day of placements to recruit these brilliant students.
