In making the decision to nurse your baby you are faced with the addition choice of what, if any , breast pump you plan to use. To help in deciding which is best for your situatiion, here are some advantages and disadvantages of the various types of breat umps.
Once you make the choice to nurse your baby, you are now faced with the decision of only nursing or whether to include expressing milk as an option. Since many moms ultimately have to rejoin the work force, using a breast pump is the ideal way to be sure your baby gets all the benefits of nursing—even if mom is unavailable. There are many pumps to choose from ranging from hand pumps to the Madela breast pump so to aid in the process, consider the following pros and cons about the breast pumps of today.
Hand Pumps: A standard hand pump requires both hands to use, so they are best for the mom who will only express on occasion. The hand pump is relatively inexpensive, easy to clean, and extremely portable. There are some versions that can be adapted to be used with electric pumps.
Low Cost Electric or Battery Operated Pumps: These work due to a small motor ran on batteries or by being plugged in to an electrical outlet. They are best for occasional use and can pump both breasts at once. This style pump is easily transported and only requires one hand to use. Its main disadvantage is the need to replace batteries or having the motor wear out.
The Electric portable Pump: There are several brands of this style of breast pump and they can range in cost from $150-$300. They work with electricity or by battery. These are especially helpful for the working mom as they come with tote bags, battery packs, car adapters, and other helpful accessories to make expressing at work easier.
Full-sized Automatic Piston Pump: This is a hospital grade pump and allows mom to adjust suction level. The pump is comfortable to use and can pump both breast simultaneously. Keep in mind, however, that pumps of this nature are not portable and must be plugged into an electrical outlet.
Time after time, studies have shown that breast milk is best for your baby. So, even if you have to pump, it is well worth the time and money invested in using a breast pump. Take some time in selecting the best breast pump possible for your situation—your baby (and you) will be healthier and happier for it.
