Hip Replacement – Anterior Approach for Superior Result

Hip replacement is done to cure the patients when pain and inflammation become almost unbearable for them. Anterior approach is a preferred option for the patients as it involves less complication but ensures faster recovery.
Arthritis is infamous for attacking joints in our body when we inch towards twilight years. Nowadays, the youth in increasing number is getting prone to arthritis. On contrary to popular belief, orthopedic surgeons do not suggest surgery in the initial stage. But once the problem reaches the acute stage, replacement of the non-functioning joints emerges as the only option to treat the problem. Hip replacement is a common surgery performed to help the patients get back to the normal chores without difficulty and delay.

In the last decade, medical science has registered an impressive improvement. The latest surgical technologies involve less complication but turn out to be more effective. With the advent of technology, the surgeons have almost discarded the backside hip replacement method and instead opted for the anterior approach.
The surgical objectives of adopting the latest innovation in this field are to minimize the damage, lessen the risk and maximize the benefits. As opposed to the formal procedure, the modern technique of hip replacement takes less time but ensures the best possible result. The latest approach separates the muscles to have an access to the front part of the hip, thereby reducing the risk of muscle damage to a significant extent. But the improved method also carries some risks for the patients. So, the wise assessment of both risks and benefits is a must before going for the hip replacement surgery.

Surprising it may sound for the readers but the fact is that anterior hip Replacement, though an advanced method, is not a new one. This technique was amply described by Smith-Peterson way back in 1917. French surgeon, Robert Judet, first performed this surgery for isolated femoral head replacement in 1947. The trend was followed by the other doctors and during that period, many hip replacement surgeries were done through anterior exposure.
It may be an inevitable question why there is a renewed interest in anterior hip replacement when it has been in existence for more than half a century. Earlier, the doctors found that it was fairly easy to visualize the hip socket through the hip front but it was quite difficult for them to insert a long metal stem down the femur through the anterior exposure. Moreover, it is hard to change the approach in case, complications arise. Therefore, the doctors shifted their attention to the posterior approach of hip replacement. Since then, the posterior method has become the standard way to cure the ailment.

With the outstanding progress on the technological turf, improved models of surgical instruments have been introduced for proper visualization. Anterior hip replacement has ensured resurgence with the help of a custom operating table, real time intra-operative X-ray equipment and computer-assisted technology. With risks reduced, this approach has become the most tried and trusted method to treat the patients.

The anterior technique guarantees a short recovery period. Due to the small incision made on the front part, the patients take less time to recuperate. The post operative complications, though are the same like those in the posterior method, are less in intensity. So, the patients go through the short-lived pain and troubles in the after-surgery period.
