As scientists discover new ways of harnessing our planet’s natural resources in a way that will help preserve our planet, new home builders and developers can do their part by incorporating eco friendly strategies and amenities into their blueprints. This is about more than just saving money; it is about leaving this planet in better shape than when we found it, ensuring that generations to come will be able to enjoy the natural resources we have available to us today.

There are three areas where new home builders, developers and home owners can have a positive effect on the environment.

• Use Less Water
• Use Less Power
• Contribute Back to the Eco System

Use Less Water
Using less water as a home owner doesn’t always mean taking shorter showers, skimping on the laundry or neglecting your lawn. There are enough appliances and inventions that can help you reduce your water consumption without you even noticing it. Many of today’s toilets utilize low volume flush systems, saving water every time you or a guest uses it. Also, today’s showerheads are designed in such a way to maximize water pressure and minimize water consumption. Tankless water heaters are an abstract way of decreasing your water consumption. Installing these heaters in every kitchen and bathroom will reduce the amount of time spent running the water, waiting for it to heat up.

Again, saving water is more than just reducing your monthly bill; it is about using less so there is more to go around.

Use Less Power
Ideas for using less power will manifest themselves differently throughout the world and even throughout the United States. For example, using less power in Colorado might mean cutting back on wintertime heating costs. Building homes in parts of the world that experience a more temperate summertime means actually utilizing the daylight to your advantage in order to cut down on power consumption as a result of artificial lighting.

Those living in regions where the sun shines two-thirds of the year can also take advantage of solar energy. Granted, it might not be feasible to operate a home entirely on solar energy, but many outdoor appliances such as garden lighting or even a garage/tool shed can effectively be run entirely from sunlight.

Installing automatic thermostats in homes with high heating or cooling costs are also an easy way to help reduce your power consumption in addition to making your life more comfortable during the hours you are home.

Choosing a quality developer and home builder is probably one of the most overlooked methods of reducing power consumption. A quality home builder will construct a home with tight seals, quality windows, and proper insulation. All of these elements go a long way towards reducing power consumption via lower heating/cooling costs. Minimizing the heat escaping your home is of a particular concern for those living in Colorado.

Give More than You Take
Giving back to the environment in a positive way is perhaps the best way to minimize your impact on the planet. Recycling is an easy way to assure that the materials we use on a daily basis are re-used, but more can be done. The waste that is produced in your kitchen on a daily basis shouldn’t go into the trash; it should go into a compost pile where it can create nutrient rich soil for plants and trees. Coffee grounds, egg shells, and vegetable skin are three items regularly thrown into the trash on a daily basis – all of which can be reused in the form of compost.

Think about how many trees it took to build the framework of your home and all the furniture within. You can give back by planting more trees on your property or even volunteering with local organizations that help stimulate the growth of local wildlife in the region.

Preserving the environment has moved past the stage of just being a buzzword, it is now a social responsibility that every home owner should take seriously. It won’t be long before the natural resources of this planet run out, are you doing your part to help slow things down?
