They sometimes get a bad name—often at the gym they sit there unused while the more popular fitness equipment is monopolized. However, an exercise bike can give you a great workout, and there are benefits to using it.
One great type of exercise bike is the spin bike. These have several names, such as a ‘spinner bike’ or ‘spinning bike’ but they are all basically the same. They look different than the exercise bikes you see on the fitness floor at your gym, and can give you a much more intense workout. These bikes are most often used with indoor cycling classes, which last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and can help you burn up to 1200 calories an hour. These classes are intense, but you can actually bring that intensity home, because these types of bikes are available for purchase. They are quite expensive, but can be worth it if you love to cycle and like to work hard.
When purchasing a spinner or spinning exercise bike, it is important that you have access to a television and DVD player wherever you plan to set the bike up. These bikes come with DVDs, and they are also sold separately, that are actually exercise programs. Some of these DVD workouts resemble the classes that you can take in a gym while others are more like biking outside—they show an open road in front of you, sometimes in mountains, sometimes along the beach, and are set to music to inspire your ride.
Another benefit is that for anyone with back problems, the exercise bike is one option that puts less pressure on the back. When running or even walking, each step jars the body and this can be inflammatory for back problems. Fitness bikes lessen that since there is no impact. Find one that allows you to sit in a comfortable position, without pressure on the area of discomfort, and you can ride comfortably for your workout.
An exercise bike comes in both recumbent and upright varieties. There is not one that is better than the other; it is the rider’s choice. Some people prefer the recumbent because they feel it is more comfortable, and vice versa. It is important however, to remember that whichever one you choose, you must practice proper form. If you are on an upright bike, keep good posture—don’t slump over and lay across the console. This defeats the purpose of exercising and can actually cause back problems.
Another benefit is the variety of programs you have. Most offer exercisers the options of going uphill, across flat roads for more speed, of attempting a calorie burn program and many others. When you use an exercise bike, vary your ride from time to time to keep your body guessing, so that you do not hit a plateau. And by increasing your speed and resistance each time, you will burn more and more calories.
An exercise bike is a good option both at home and at the gym. It can help you burn calories and keep your workouts fresh.
