A common sight in Singapore today is students walking straight past a café or restaurant even though it offers ‘Student Meals’ at relatively lower prices. They are not at all enticed or delighted to see such ‘deals’ because of the accompanying service charge and Goods and Service Tax (GST) that amount to a shocking 17 per cent. Indeed, with the rising cost of living in urbanized Singapore, it is no wonder why its people are so work-oriented. Even students work hard from a tender young age by attending extra lessons and tuition classes to tackle challenging subjects such as H2 Maths and H2 Physics, all in a bid to ascend the academic ladder and achieve a degree for a good job and stable income.

Global issues such as rising food and fuel shortages have also caused certain imported food prices and electricity price to escalate, compounding the problem of rising costs in Singapore. The electricity tariff for households have increased by 6.6% and food prices have risen by 2.8% this year. While most Singaporeans are able to cope with these price changes, many have resented having to pay more for basic commodities such as oil, rice and vegetables as well as public service.

Since no direct action can be taken to adjust or lower the cost of living, the only option is to earn a higher salary to meet all the expensive needs and desires. In Singapore, receiving the highest education seems to be the top priority among many students. Everyone wants to excel academically and achieve a Bachelor degree from a university. From the recently published Graduate Employment Survey, graduating from a local university is enough to earn students an average monthly salary of S$3000. That starting amount is more than sufficient to cover daily expenses as well as other wants.

However, achieving a Bachelor degree in Singapore is not necessarily the minimum to survive in a country where prices only skyrocket. Getting a diploma of any discipline from a Polytechnic can also reward graduates with a good career and income to sustain themselves. According to the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore, polytechnic graduates earn a monthly gross salary of up to S$2000. Even O level and A level graduates can find government jobs that grant a reasonable pay.

In reality, it does not matter where you graduate from and what you graduate with. In order to cope with the high cost of living in Singapore, the more pragmatic approach is to develop values of prudence when handling one’s finance. Being overly frugal is not necessary, just spend on what is essential. If you are a spendthrift who enjoys spending on extravagant wants, then you will suffer the most from the rising living costs. Developing bad habits of gambling will also throw away your hard-earned money. It will be worse if you commit flagrant errors of consuming drugs, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol, all of which only harm one’s health and burn a gigantic hole in one’s pocket. Therefore, achieving the highest education and getting a degree is not so much about earning more money, but about learning the importance of good habits for life, such as saving for rainy days and times of rising living costs.
