Calling it Quits – How to Know When It is Time for a Divorce

You've got marriage problems – should you get a divorce or try to work things out? There are certain signs that can tell you whether a marriage is worth saving or not.
It takes two people to dance a tango, and it takes two to make a marriage work. A one sided relationship will not do wonders for a marriage, as the word literally means the union of two people to become one individual and this means accepting each other’s qualities and faults. Thinking that acceptance is one sided will not hold a marriage together as some people find out too late.

We are all taught that marriage is sacred and yet more and more people are getting a divorce for the wrong reasons because they started a marriage for the wrong reasons also. If a marriage fails, it takes a lot of deep thinking and talking over to attempt to salvage it and if both partners are mature enough to face difficulties together to make their family continue, then the marriage can be saved. However, there are signs that a partner has to get out of a marriage fast.

Trust is earned and trusting a partner is a very important aspect in any relationship. Playing around in extramarital affairs is not a good basis for trust, it is also unhealthy. When a partner loses trust, then it is time to either regain it or get out.

If the partner is an addict and refuses to change or get treated, this will open the possibilities of abuse of one or more members in a family. Not only will they get violent, but the financial drain would be staggering.

A marriage is between two people not just one. If partners are supportive of each other, the love and trust will increase. However, if one partner feels that the other should give up their rights as an individual for the sake of the other, for a while it may work, until the other realizes that they want to live too.

Acceptance is a key element in a marriage. Nobody can claim excuses that they never knew the personal habits of their spouses like in the Victorian era. Today, people are more open about relationships and have probably lived together before getting married. Personal habits are pretty hard to hide from someone when living together.

Communication is another aspect in marriage that is very important. The minute your thoughts are no longer considered and there is no attempt on the part of the significant other to communicate with you then it is a done deal if there is no counseling involved.

Physical relations between couples are an integral part of a marriage. If the partner is not interested sexually and yet has no problems with having it with another, then there is definitely something wrong here. Communication can come in handy in this situation and if communication is successful, the affection will just resurface.

If when reading this article you feel that the checklist describes your marriage, then think of counseling first. Divorce is a cowardly way out for anyone if there is still a semblance of affection between partners. “I love you but I can’t live with you” is an exhausted excuse, no one loves someone without acceptance and acceptance of each other is the foundation of marriage. Think over carefully the symptoms of your problems and see if they are the superficial type which can be solved.

There is no other advice but to get out if the marriage is a violent one. It will not only be good for you but if there are children, it would be safer for them.

Marriage is a union between two people. To keep a marriage whole, trust, communication and love for one another will be the best weapons against any problems which may be faced later on.
