The beautiful state of Montana has served an incredible significance to the development of the western United States as well as the entire country. The modern day Montana is not too far off from the beauty of seclusion and resourcefulness that has made it a subtly important foundation for development. From the Native American’s first dwellings, to the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806 and now to the modern surge of luxury real estate, second home developments and spectacular ranch properties, the state of Montana continues to be a place of exploration and wonderment making it truly “The Last Best Place”..
One of the most significant cities in Montana is Bozeman. Bozeman, Montana was never inhabited but commonly traveled through by Native Americans for hundreds of years until trappers arrived in the late 1700’s in an attempt to purge the area of its beavers for the fur trade. Located in the scenic Gallatin River valley, the area is rich in fertile land and water resources. The Gallatin River was named by Lewis and Clark during their expedition to the West Coast after Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury appointed by Thomas Jefferson in 1801.
Gold however, is the major factor of historical influence for Bozeman. Ironically, Bozeman was founded by men who attempted to get rich off of the gold rush but were never able to make it. The small town was named after John Bozeman who was the originator of the Bozeman Trail that led to the Gold Mines in Montana off the original Oregon Trail. From these odd roots, the town of Bozeman grew larger and more influential and is located in the fastest growing county in the state.
The small town of Bozeman has changed over time. From the original settlers, to the gold rush, and all the ranching and skiing in between, Bozeman has consistently reinvented itself with modern necessities, while still maintaining its western character and historic roots.
John Bozeman, Daniel Rouse and William Beall platted the town in 1864 and in 1866, Nelson Story arrived with 3,000 head of long horn cattle, eluding both Native Americans and the U.S. Army who would have turned him back for his own safety. Fort Ellis was established in 1867 to protect the local settlers and miners but was decommissioned about 20 years later.
The Northern Pacific Railroad reached Bozeman in 1883 and the town’s population jumped to 3,500 by 1900.
Through the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century, the Bozeman, Montana luxury real estate market has truly helped fuel the economy and life of this unique town. Bozeman has grown consistently at about 4% over the past ten years as one of the most livable towns in America. While agriculture, the construction industry and Montana State University continue large in the economy of Bozeman, high technology companies such as Zoot Enterprises and Right Now Technologies are growing in importance. Bozeman offers employers an unparalleled set of lifestyle pursuits which help when recruiting a young, educated workforce. Surrounded by the Bridgers, Spanish Peaks and Tobacco Root mountains and the Gallatin River running through the center make for stunning scenery year-round. Bridger Bowl is Bozeman’s local ski resort just 20 minutes drive from town and Big Sky, one of the world’s premier skiing resorts is just 40 miles away.
