When it comes to luxury motoring the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes S Class lead the way. The two German brands have been at the forefront of luxury saloon models for years. The likes of Jaguar and Audi have always been a threat, but now there is fierce competition from Japanese brands such as Lexus and Infiniti.
The BMW 7 Series has been the flagship model for BMW since its launch in 1977; it is only available as a 4 door saloon or an extended limousine. The 7 Series has been known to showcase some of the latest technology and design cues before they are rolled out on the other BMW models.
The latest model of the 7 Series came out in 2009, likes its predecessors it is a full size saloon also available in limo spec as well as a bullet proof version! There are quite a few engines options on the 7 Series, including a 3.0 litre diesel producing 242 bhp. The smallest petrol engine is a 4.0 litre straight six with 322 bhp, it can do 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds. The largest petrol model is the 6.0 litre V12 with 537 bhp, it can do 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds. All engines are mated to automatic transmission.
As you would expect from a super luxury car the 7 Series rides and handles very well. The BMW 7 Series interior is packed of new technology and optional extras. The long wheel based limo spec models get rear air sprung suspension, providing superior ride comfort. The firmness of the ride can be easily adjusted by flicking a switch, making it easy to accommodate city driving as well as motorway cruises.
