Adult learning, or adult education, is the practice of training and developing skills in adults. It is also often referred to as andragogy (the art and science of helping adults learn). Today, teaching adults is seen as a powerful tool that can bring about fundamental social, political and economic change.

After the recently concluded 10th census of the Indian sub continent, it's annoying to know that the nations inhabits 1.21 billion human beings. What’s even more disturbing is the fact that India may surpass China in the population count in a decade or two. But if we consider the other demographic determiners, is the situation really negative for the country? Given that a developed country, with an enviable GDP, such as Japan is experiencing a negative birth rate and a steadily aging population, precisely the work force, which is giving the Japanese economists sleepless nights, how worrisome is the Indian scenario? On the contrary, the Indian state has a young population, approximately ¾ th of it's population is youth and a equal fraction of work force, how likely is it that the country can turn the tide in it's favour? This fact may go in the opposite direction of the philosophers, who consider this huge population as bane, but there exists a certain school of philosophers, who consider it as a boon in disguise. But the key to this remains in quality Adult education.
When we dream of our country with a changed tag of “developed” rather than “developing”, a lots needs to be done about the work force. An educated work force is a prerequisite to a satisfying and stable economic growth. No amount of FIIs or FDIs can match that, never ever. What's more to this is that the education parted to this humungous adult population shall foster the country in it's social developmental index too. But it's easy to say than being done. The amount and quality of infrastructure, commitment, channeling of funds and the quality of human resource that needs to be invested might give jitters to even the government of the global super-power. It's no doubt that once fulfilled, it can do wonders for the sovereign state of India, but it' realization demands a prolonged qualitative investment.
Coming to the point of realization of this dream, the initiative needs to be taken on a war-footing. Proper publicity, adequate funds, effective counseling, cohesive learning environment, new and effective ways of teaching such as spoken words, spoken words reproduced through radio or recording, written words, chart, graphs and maps, objects produced or reproduced as models, demonstrations, pageants, dramas, television and other objects represented as pictures, field trips and specially arranged exhibitions, museums or films shows etc could hold the key. What more needs to be done on the government's part is to keep it away from politicized. With the current scenario in the country literacy could reduce the vote banks for many political parties. Lots needs to be done but the day India realizes this feat, it will certainly be a red-letter day in the history of the world.
